Melbourne.- Un terremoto de magnitud 5.9 causó daños en la ciudad de Melbourne el miércoles, en un temblor inusualmente potente para Australia.
El sismo se produjo unos 130 kilómetros al noreste de la segunda ciudad más poblada de Australia, cerca de la localidad de Mansfield, a una profundidad de 10 kilómetros, según Geoscience Australia.
El alcalde de Mansfield, Mark Holcombe, dijo que no tenía información de que hubiera daños en la ciudad. Los medios de comunicación mostraron imágenes de daños en algunas paredes en Chapel Street, en el suburbio de South Yarra.
El Primer Ministro, Scott Morrison, dijo que no hay reportes de heridos graves.
El terremoto ha sido el de mayor intensidad en remecer a Australia desde que se produjo un temblor de magnitud 6.6 con epicentro a 210 kilómetros de la ciudad costera de Broome, en el noroeste del país, en 2019.
